The Climate Risk & Resilience Team at FM is seeking a creative, self-motivated individual for an internship in Norwood, MA. The intern will work under the supervision of senior staff and will have the opportunity to tackle real-world science and engineering challenges in the insurance industry. The project involves:

  • Cleaning past tornado loss data
  • Linking these losses to known tornadoes and tornado outbreak events
  • Collecting available engineering information related to the losses
  • Creating a searchable GIS database

The internship is planned to last 3 to 6 months. By the end of the internship, the intern will gain experience in

  • Tornado research
  • Insurance losses
  • Wind engineering

Qualifications

We are looking for undergraduate students in good academic standing who wish to expand their research experience beyond academia.  Ideal candidates will have:

  • Attention to detail
  • Strong analytical skills
  • GIS skills (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, GDAL)
  • Experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, R, Python, and FORTRAN
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort with writing shell scripts and using APIs to automate workflows
  • Familiarity with both Microsoft Windows and Linux environments

This is an in-office role based in Norwood, MA.  Temporary relocation support provided for selected qualified candidate.
