Overview - External

The Innovation Consultant – Science and Technology is a key support role within the Innovation team. The incumbent will participate in building internal/external sources to identify, research, and assess emerging signals of change in the market, new technologies, and scientific advances. This incumbent will work with the broader Innovation team, whose findings will feed new opportunities into the innovation system, influence our corporate venture capital investment portfolio, and inform the strategic planning efforts of FM Global and our mutual members. This role is also relied upon as a source of external insight by tracking industry and technological trends, identifying and communicating innovation strategies to both internal/external audiences, and managing partnerships with start-ups and vendors.

Responsibilities - External

  • Synthesize/Share Insights and Inform Planning - Participates in the preparation of compelling perspectives on emerging trends to FM Global and mutual member leaders to help influence direction and inform strategic planning. Lead structured ideation sessions.  Provide parameters for ideas, frame problem statements, and identify SME assessors to review output. 
  • Research/Explore Insights - Structure and conduct primary/secondary research studies and experiments into prioritized emerging trends, technologies, and science. Conduct initial evaluation of the scope of the opportunity for FM Global and estimate the time horizon.  Works with cross-functional teams to gather and define business/product requirement.  Builds positive relationships internally and externally to aid in identifying emerging trends and vetting FM Global hypotheses.
  • Support the exploration of opportunities to publish findings for broader adoption within industry. Apply a broad knowledge of engineering sciences, analytics, computational sciences, and experimental techniques at all states of the innovation process from ideation to launch.  Challenge the status quo with creative, yet technically viable concepts that provide technical breakthroughs.
  • Assessment of Insights - Collaborate with the broader innovation team to make recommendations in defining prioritization criteria and assessing emerging trends to separate “signals” from “noise” and prioritize those for further development..
  • Project Management - Creates and maintains overall project plan, ensures appropriate resourcing with various partners, provides project status to senior management. Serve as “coach” through each phase of innovation from idea to launch. 
  • Idea Development/Progress Assessment - Continue to assess weighting of investments across the team (science, business, data) portfolio and recommend rebalancing as warranted based on the pace and scope of progress. Participate in cross-team portfolio reviews and resource allocation discussions/decisions.
  • Participating in various experimentation streams. Synthesize findings, vet with internal/external SMEs, leaders, and clients.  Make recommendations to senior leadership based on findings.


Qualifications - External

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required; ideally in engineering or other science.
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of proven progressive experience and a minimum of 3 years of proven project/account management. Experience in research, market analysis, or consulting preferred.

  • Should have a passion for technology and feel at home in both coding and business environments.
