Overview - External

We are looking for a professional to occupy a position of Codes and Standards Consultant with FM Global at the São Paulo office. This is an office based position. The successful candidate will work with Marcelo Lima, Codes and Standards Consultant for this office and will report to Christopher Wieczorek, Manager International Codes and Standards.

This consultant position is primarily a technical role in the International Codes and Standards Group for their respective country/region. This individual is a recognized authority in loss prevention in their field of expertise. With support and direction of their Manager, the individual will develop strategies, primarily directed at achieving greater acceptance and advocacy of FM Global loss prevention standards by the local authorities having jurisdiction, as well as the pursuit of influence over local loss prevention standards and practices. The objective is to reduce the HPR-critical gaps between local standards and those of FM Global. This will be achieved through direct participation and contribution, primarily in technical forums as well as through coordination and leveraging of FM Global resources.


Taking direction from their manager or senior consultant where present, the individual will also apply their technical knowledge and expertise towards achieving greater regulatory requirements or effective incentives for the provision of HPR-critical features via building codes e.g., sprinklers.

Responsibilities - External

With the support and direction of the Manager of the group, the Consultant shall contribute to the development and execution of a country/region level business plan for the influence of property loss prevention related building codes and standards. The Consultant will take direct ownership and responsibility for specific components of the plan, particularly those in their field of technical expertise.


Leveraging FM Global’s strengths, establish and develop effective relationships with key technical organizations, such as regulators, standards bodies, academia etc. in the particular domain of interest to FM Global.


Actively leverage all available resources, such as support from the Engineering Standards, FM Approvals, Research, Learning from Losses groups etc., as well as the Consultant’s own area of expertise to develop and execute the most effective strategies and means to achieve   improvements in codes, and promote the acceptance and use of FM Global standards.


Liaise with the Operations Engineering Manager, OCEs and FM Approvals staff in the relevant country/region, at an appropriate frequency, to promote teamwork, an awareness of the consultant’s activities and to understand the key codes and standards issues affecting the local Operations.


Qualifications - External

Bachelors degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

  • At least 7 years’ experience, related to loss prevention, in an industrial/consulting setting e.g., consulting, technical sales, safety professional. (in needed area of expertise e.g., fire, natural hazards)
  • Relationship management - aptitude for the development of effective consultant / trusted-advisor relationships.
  • Extensive knowledge of locally-relevant codes and standards.
  • Self-starter: ability to operate and be managed effectively remotely
